Today we share top tips for wooden worksurface care from Bettinsons Kitchens Leicester. We know that the kitchen is a room full of activity so will be hit by natural wear and tear, but you can maintain working areas to make them stand the test of time.
Re-oil every three to six months – In order to take good care of your wooden worktops it is recommended that you recoat them with oil every three to six months depending on usage. Here’s a quick tip to help you establish when your worktop will need a coat of oil. Firstly, the worktop’s sheen may diminish leaving the surface looking dry and dull. Also, if water / liquid drops onto a oiled / protected wooden surface it will form globules, you’ll know if the worksurface needs a re-oil, because liquids will lie flat / pool onto the surface. Definitely speak to us at Bettinsons Kitchens, because we’d be happy to advise you on the best oils to use.
Mop Up Water & Liquid – Aside from re-oiling your worksurface a good tip for day to day care is to ensure you mop up spilt water and liquids immediately. Don’t leave them to stand on the worktop. It’s particularly important to get into the habit of wiping up liquids around the sink area.
Protect Against Heat – It’s advisable not to let hot metal pans on the worksurface. Ensure you keep trivets or pan stands to hand to make sure they can be used for hot pans. Prolonged contact with hot items can cause dark or black markings to form on the worktops.
No Cutting on the Worksurface – Make sure you don’t cut up items directly on the worksurface. This can cause scratches, compromise the protective surface the oil leaves on the surface, which allows water and liquid to absorb into in and generally makes the worktop look scruffy. Definitely use chopping blocks and boards for any work with knives.
